About Stitchclub's Founder

My name is Alison McNicol and I founded Stitchclub in 2005 with just a great idea, 2 classes a week in London, and big dreams of teaching children to sew all over the country!
Having spent over a decade in the music industry, travelling the world handling PR for lots of bands and pop stars - first at major record companies and later running my own successful PR company - I was more than ready for a change.
Like many women today, I dreamed of a more creative, fulfilling career that would not only be flexible and fit in with family life, but be fun, rewarding and make me feel more connected to the community I lived in. I went through a million ideas before thinking of Stitchclub.
I was lucky enough to have a very talented gran to teach me, and sewing lessons at school, but I knew that sewing was no longer on the school curriculum. Not all children these days have the luxury of a grandparent around the corner, and many parents work, and have neither the time, experience or patience to sit and teach their children these skills.
I felt that a whole generation was missing out on these simple pleasures, but knew it wasn't too late to catch the current generation of children and introduce sewing in a fun, cool and contemporary way.
Stitchclub would shake off the "old lady" image of sewing and appeal to a whole new generation of kids. Sewing would be cool again!
So with this hunch, a whole lot of research and lots of hard work, planning and investment Stitchclub was born!
At my first ever class, I knew my instincts were right. "Stitchclub is just the best thing I have EVER done", said one 9 year old. "Thank you SO much, we've been looking for this kind of class for ages. Sophie absolutely LOVES Stitchclub" said one mum. "I feel so guilty that I can't teach my own daughter these things, so I'm delighted you are. I cannot believe she made these amazing things herself" said another.
Within weeks of launching those first couple of classes, word of mouth kicked in and the response was quite phenomenal. Parents were amazed at the quality of the classes, the materials we were using and the skills their children were learning. The children weren't concerned about "life skills", they simply thought it was amazing fun!

Within 6 months I was running 12 classes a week on my own, with full waiting lists for every class, and turning away children who were desperate to learn to sew.
The next step was to employ and train some fantastic teachers, and conceive, design and copyright the unique Stitchclub Sewing Curriculum TM, featuring our easy to follow Stitchclub Skill Level Books, Patterns and Projects, all designed and illustrated especially for the younger stitcher.
A comprehensive teacher training schedule was put in place and some great new teachers were trained, allowing us to expand further. Still, there was more demand, with emails from people all over the country, asking for a Stitchclub near them, and from amazing, creative and talented women keen to get involved with Stitchclub and asking for a Stitchclub franchise.
So now Stitchclub has launched the Stitchclub franchise nationally and we are busy adding new classes all over the UK. Our unique tried-and-tested Stitchclub curriculum and comprehensive training programme, together with our fantastic Head Office support team and online Franchisees forum, is helping talented and creative women across the UK to join the Stitchclub family and, with our help, training and support, run their own fun, creative and rewarding business to suit their own and family needs.
At Stitchclub, we aim to make everyone's creative dreams come true.
My own dream is to have a Stitchclub is every city, town and village in the UK and beyond! Sew far, sew good!! If you're interested in joining the team we'd love to hear from you, so please see our franchise page for more info.
Keep stitching!
Alison McNicol
